Eye tracking

We measure participants' eye movements while they listen to sentences or read text. This helps us understand how they understand and process language.

※ This procedure is not a test of individual ability.

眼球運動測定について

Participants are asked to sit in front of a computer monitor and either look at pictures or read sentences in Japanese that are presented on the screen. At the same time they will hear sentences played over a speaker. They will then be asked to do things such as select one of several pictures corresponding to what they heard, or asked to indicate whether or not the picture matches the sentence they have heard.
During the procedure, near-infrared light (a very weak, harmless light with a frequency invisible to the human eye) is shone at the participant's eyes, is reflected off of the pupil, and recorded by a video camera. The camera is integrated into the monitor, so the participant may carry out the tasks without being particularly conscious of the measurement. There is no discomfort associated with this procedure.
